I’ve been accumulating these images of Tura Satana as the deadly and amoral Varla for a few months. It was a future post. Given the news now seems like the apt time.
Actress Tura Satana died yesterday in Reno, Nev., according to the New York Times. Satana appeared in numerous movies and TV shows, including Billy Wilder’s 1963 film Irma la Douce. The colorful and curvaceous actress also worked as an exotic dancer and once turned down a proposal of marriage from Elvis Presley.
Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! star Tura Satana has died
Russ Meyer cast her as Varla in Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!. Varla was the supreme bad girl who used men – anyone actually – for her own selfish satisfaction.
Female domination wasn’t of any real interest to me at the time I first saw the movie. Varla stunned me: groveling in the dust at her boots seemed the only possible response.
Over time film turned Tura Satana into a superstar of pop culture. It is the sole source of her fame and reputation. Her subsequent movies are unwatchable.
